news trimming
An immense pile of old news articles has been shifted out of news's
current database.  Some of these undoubtedly really should have been
retained, and the whole mess will come back at such time as some
improvements to news make its database handling more efficient for
big databases.  This has affected only items from the network;  local
items are being removed more selectively by Laura.  When this process
is complete, news should be considerably faster (for a while, anyway...).
This will buy some time for the needed improvements to news.
