Runaway Dumps

The Kennedy 125 ips drives are famous for going into fast-wind when they
are first opened and a short record is written.  We also use dd for dumps
(by choice) but our sequence involves opening the drive for writing and then
closing it again to make sure it is writable first -- sometimes it spins off
the end (then our maintenance guy comes in, swears at it and it works again).
