The gases range in temperature from 600 million to 1 billion degrees Fahrenheit, dwarfing the sun's surface temperate of 10,000. They are twice as hot as the plasma cloud on Jupiter, discovered in 1979 by Voyager. Scientists hope that this may provide an even better source of energy than fusion power, the kind made by the sun. The spacecraft was not destroyed on passing through the zone because the area is not dense, and only a few particles hit the ship.
