I agree with you that some sort of followup capability is a good idea.
I'm using a modified version of news that permits followup articles, though
it does not as yet group them together.  In fact, that feature really can't
be added to the Duke netnews, because of some very early design decisions
(we didn't anticipate this volume!).  It should be possible to do that in
the Berkeley version, though I'm not certain that the original note can
easily be displayed.
