I would expect little trouble renting an airplane in the NYC area.
There are at least a dozen airports within a 50 mile radius that have
FBOs that can rent a single-engine Cessna, Piper, or Beechcraft.
I doubt the list includes Kennedy, Laguardia, Newark, or Westchester,
and don't know about Flushing, but I would expect that any other
metropolitan area airport would have an FBO
