The NYC area is highly congested with heavy traffic. This makes it at
least undesirable if not impossible to cross the NYC TCA.
The closest FBO with the most services appears to be in Teterboro, N.J.
The field is less than a half hour drive from midtown Manhatten and is
generally easier to get to than most other general fields. The last time
that I was there, planes of the 172 variety rented for $26 an hour.
Check with any of the 3 or 4 schools on the field for the best rate.
Other fields in the area are Westchester County Airport (rather far
away actually) and Republic field near Hicksville Long Island. I don't have
any info on these except for their ease of access. Long Island can be
hard to get to during rush hour and most weekends. Westchester is a longer
drive.
