One important exception to John Winterton's basic safety rules:  if you
are working on rotating machinery, you do *not* wear gloves.  It is better
to get a gouge on your hand than to have your glove catch on the rotating
stuff and drag you into the machinery.  Likewise watches, bracelets, and
rings are taboo.  As are cleaning rags:  use paper towels, which tear
much more easily.
