I am looking for a program that will dial another computer system,
and by following a script, interact with the remote system as though it
were a human user.  For example, the program could call up a local hobby
computerized bulletin board system and deposit or retrieve messages.

At each point in the dialogue, the program would know how to respond if a
certain message is received; in this way, error conditions and actions
could be anticipated.  If the program got a reply it did not know how to
handle, it could generate a file containing the entire session and notify
the requesting (human) user.

Has anybody written such a program that they'd be willing to release?
