I am a hacker, so that disqualifies women in the computer field for me. I am a ballet dancer, that disqualifies them (ouch!). I contra dance, I play frisbee, I like far-eastern food, movies, skiing, chess and submitting netnews. I also like computers, in much the same way as I like these other persuits. Why should the woman who is interested in computers be any more disqualified than women who are interested in my other favorite endeavors? Have you guys ever heard of sharing? My life is enhanced by sharing my joys with my friends. In computer science, that might mean showing my sweetie a particularly disgusting hack. In chess, it might mean showing her a startling endgame combination. It might be sharing a walk down a road in autumn and so on. I don't understand why it's imperative to have a sweetheart who hasn't the same vocation as I do. Other attributes are so much MORE important. My sweetie happens to hack. It's not her fault. I met her folk dancing. What difference would it make if I'd met her over electronic mail? Would that change her one bit? If she didn't hack I'd think highly of her, nonetheless.
