(I don't know where it came from so I can't give the publishing credit.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- IS THERE LIFE AFTER MARRIAGE? by Lionel Tiger Many people are married to people who have been married to people who have been married to other people who are now married to still others to whom the first parties may not have been married, but to whom somebody has likely been married. Our society, once based on the principle of solid monogamy until death do us part, has shifted toward a pattern of serial polygamy, in which people experience more than one spouse, if only one at a time. Thus we appear to be moving to a new and imprecise system we might call omnigamy, in which each will be married to all. People keep marrying, even though happy marriages are regarded as surprising and much-envied occurances. Various responsible estimators expect that from a third to a half of the marriages formed in this decade will end in divorce sometime. It is also astonishing that, under the circumstances, marriage is still legally allowed. If nearly half of anything else ended so disastrously, the government would surely ban it immediately. If half the tacos served in restaurants caused dysentery, if half the people learning karate broke their palms, if only six percent of people who went on roller-coasters damaged their middle ears, the public would be clamoring for action. Yet the most intimate of disasters - with consequences that may last a lifetime for both adults and children - happens over and over again. ------------------------------------------------------------- Lionel Tiger???
