Rather than being constantly lonely, I Kept up my friendships with other people, most of which were male. I had one friend in particular named Norman who I got along with excellently. We would get together Tuesdays and Thursdays for lunch, which meant dropping over to his dorm room for tea and sandwiches (FIE ON DINING HALLS!!!) while listening to the loudest classical music in his possession with the door wide open, a sort of thumbing of the nose at the punk rockers down the hall. We also went to see movies, plays, etc., once making a "date" for the school's opera while my fi- ance was over visiting me. We all had a good laugh over that. By now you get the picture - two poeple of the opposite sex who were great friends without any sexual attraction, where one was in a romantic relationship with another person and that other person not feeling threatened by the friend- ship. All's cool, right? So why does my ex-boyfriend go up to Norman and ask what is going on between us? (Besides being incredibly crass, I didn't realize the dear boy still cared.) So why does one of the women I work with come up to me and ask about my "new boyfriend"? (it took me a while to figure out who she was talking about.) Why do the guys across the hall from Norman, when they dis- cover that I am engaged to somebody else, make remarks indicating their belief that I am "cheating" on my fiance? Fortunately, none of the three of us were much interested in public opinion, except as a source of constant amusement and many protracted fits of giggling. My fiance and I are now happily married, Norman has found a job and will hope- fully be able to visit occasionally, and my ex-boyfriend still asks occasional nosy questions about me, even though he is married to my ex-roommate. All in all, a very silly story.
