I am looking for a general, student level primer which discusses various kinds
of communication methods - ie: modems, acoustic couplers, Digital PBX, LAN's
etc.  The material should be NON TECHNICAL, suited for 1st or 2nd yr CMPT
students w/o EE background.

If anyone can suggest references I would greatly appreciate it.
