It is NOT the same as the .UL instruction in the old package. There are several possibilities available for producing the same effect: you can use .I to start italic font (underlining on most printers); a passage started this way should be ended with .R you can enclose text in \fI...\fR pairs; these will behave as before, producing underlining on most printers .UL may be used to underline the single word given as an argument.
