after a little head-scratching, my spouse and i opened her ira in a common
stock mutual fund -- dreyfus #9, to be precise.  after deciding on common stock
(one cheer for the capitalist system), we chose dreyfus on the basis of their
marketing (it's true -- hell they sent me mail and everything) and their
maintenance fee: $2.50/year.
