Yes, I know the difference between a Phillips and a "blade" screwdriver. I could probably change a tire if the need arose, and I don't have to get my husband to help turn the queen-size matress. My last job was as a potwasher, and I had to fight to get that. The manager (this was at a college dining hall) was of the opinion that only the guys could be pot- washers, what with all the heavy lifting. If she had said that I was too short to reach into the vats to clean them, she might have been right. But the reaction, "That's no job for a girl", was ridiculous. Don't get the impression that I am particularly strong, because I'm not. It's just would feel I was being lazy if I didn't do my share of the work. As for mechanichal tinkering, I have been good at getting the sewing ma- chine to work, and playing with the piano mechanism when it bogs down, convincing the telephone I broke to work again, and have been learning about cars. When I worked in the dishroomat college, if something didn't work on one of the machines, and I was around, They would ask me if I could do something about it before calling maintainence. Did any of this make me feel "unfeminine"? Actually, it made me feel use- ful, sometimes even intelligent. I never worried about being "femenine". Nor was I trying to be a Feminist. I just try to be a real person. Barb, glad to be myself
