Article-I.D.: tekcrd.772 Posted: Fri Nov 5 13:34:22 1982 Received: Tue Nov 9 05:23:59 1982 By now I am beginning to feel like an exhibitionist, but all these interesting topics keep coming up, and like most of the rest of you, I feel there may be something to contribute... Yes, I am a male (33) that CAN cook. But I seldom do. The problem comes from when I WAS married (`bout a million years ago). When first married, my wife did all the cooking and housework. That was her job. Mine was to bring home a paycheck, mow the lawn, empty the garbage and keep the car running. Typical marriage scenerio. Then the economy put the pinch on us and she got a job. Time for me to come out of the closet... I started sharing equally in all things in the house. If she cooked, I washed the dishes. Next night, I cooked. Yes, and vacuumed the carpets, made beds, scoured the toilet, etc. Yes, I even learned how to darn socks and I can not only sew, but have created some absolutely fantastic shirts. That's about the time the trouble started. The wife started feeling like I didn't NEED her for anything. I didn't think that was the point (I just wanted her near me), but she actually began to resent the fact that I could do anything she could (except bear children) and she could not do everything I could. It was not long after that I woke up single. Sigh... Back to the question. Yes, I CAN cook (etc), but what the hell is the point in cooking if there is no one there to share it with??? It seems terribly wasteful to lay on a gourmet dinner for one and eat left- overs for a week. At least with hamburg-helper there isn't so much waste. Or even suffering through a MacWhopper. I guess this is one reason why women for centuries have felt cheated - their damn husbands didn't praise them for their effort, and if he doesn't seem to care, why bother? As I say, if I can't serve it to someone who appreciates it, I'm not going to cook it in the first place. Note to Billie Goldstein: for what it's worth, I'd come to the party, but New Jersey isn't exactly around the corner. Shall we have a party out here, west coast folk? I'll even COOK something...
