As a service to the readers of this newsgroup, I thought I'd pass
on the explanation of Mr. Bunje's message that he just gave me:

The intent was a very clever play on the phrase "old and IN THE WAY."
This being so, one should interpret the phrase "two tons of Detroit
steel" as "an automobile."

Thus Carl was expressing his opinion that the writer who had just
turned 30, and was feeling old and in the way, should not worry, unless
s/he is standing in the fast lane of a busy highway.
