I can't remember that last time I was invited to a party given by
a true 'single'.  It seems that couples, married or otherwise,
are the party givers.

I always invite couples to my parties.

Partying with work friends can, and often does, become boring 
because inevitably the conversation turns to work.  To combat this,
and to meet new people, I do the following when having a party.
I invite all the people I'm interested in having and ask them to
invite two to four of their friends.  This way everyone knows
*someone*, but everyone doesn't know everyone.  The result is
always a very interesting and enjoyable evening.

ps.  when giving a "one invites four" party make sure you calculate
     the number of people that could potentially show up.
