This is in reponse to Rich's article on taking your spouse's name.
In New Jersey, when two people marry, the woman automatically gets
her husband's last name, whether she wants it or not! If she continues
to use her maiden name, she is doing so illegally. In order to legally
maintain her maiden name, she must go through legal proceedings.
My lawyer told me this. She also mentioned, however, that as far as
she knows, nothing has ever been done to any woman who just keeps using
her maiden name after marriage.

I figured this was good food for thought for anyone planning to keep or
who thought they kept their maiden name.
