If two people decide to live together, their ability to share resources makes them have more money to spend on other things ==> they are richer ==> tehy should be taxed more! If barbaral was renting an apartment for over $215 a month, and then married, moved in with her husband (no sexism--an arbitrary choice), and payed the extra $2500/year in taxes they'd be saving money! This was especially attractive in the old days, since if you look at what happens when someone who works marries someone who doesn't, they are actually taxed less. This taxation system no longer works because people can live together and not be married, save the money through sharing, and not pay the taxes.
