More recently, I have also wondered if confusing love and infatuation isn't a practice more common to Americans than the world at large. I'm not prepared to defend either notion, but I do feel that there are different concepts of all kinds of interpersonal relationships (including love) and we should watch for ethnocentricity before we start making value judgements. The only romantic concepts I feel like condemning are those that only serve as an excuse for exploitation. The men that confuse love and laundry fall into the this category, along with the women that subscribe to the Cinderella syndrome cynically rather than out of conditioning "from birth".
