If your spouse dies, joint accounts are frozen by the banks as soon as they get wind of the death. If you have your own account, you can quickly transfer all your 'joint money' there before the obituaries come out (or however they know). My mother did this when my father became critically ill in the hospital. He did not pull through (what a topic for net.singles), but my mother was able to pull through because of what she did. I wonder if people will object to newlyweds considering "divorce by death" as something to plan for?
