        Before I gave up on the idea altogether,  I went one-for-three
in carrying on long-distance romances.  My one success was admittedly
(on her part) a function of a lot of gifts, flowers and transatlantic
phone calls.  The other critical point was that there was a definite
end in sight, only six months away at a time when she was very busy
anyway.
