Article-I.D.: kpno.121 Posted: Thu Nov 18 16:22:28 1982 Received: Sat Nov 20 10:44:15 1982 Since we are not part of the Bell System I have a question for any Bell/AT&T employee out there in net land. There have been many references of late to versions 4 and 5 of UNIX*. The last BSTJ contained an article that referenced version 4.0. Now I see references to 5.0 too. >From what I understand, versions 6 and 7 were actually 1.6 and 1.7; version 2 never made it out the door to sites other than Bell; version 3.0 is now being sold by AT&T (System III). What are versions 4 & 5 ? What has changed from V7 and System III ? I hear rumors of inter-process communications and real-time ? Has Bell finished using version 3 in-house ? Please mail me directly, rather than multiple answers to the net. I'll summarize if there is interest. Richard Stevens Kitt Peak National Observatory ...ucbvax!arizona!kpno!stevens
