Goodfellow Remailed-To: Info-VAX@SRI-CSL: ; At a not-too-recent Local Users' Group meeting, the subject came up (we were discussing DECnet) about network access to licensed software. Something like SPSS is licensed to a particular site, but network users can access it according to the WORLD protection field. I proposed the following changes to the protection scheme, and got head-nods and mumbles of agreement, but nothing more. So I'm posting it to the net to see how it sits with the Outer World. Please send comments to me, and I'll post the final results after a few weeks. Proposed change: Change the access of everything that now goes through the SYSTEM protection field to either have RWED access AT ALL TIMES, or to use the same access rights as OWNER. (With BYPASS available, the latter seems better.) Use the four bits currently in the SYSTEM field for NETWORK access, so that such things as licensed software is available to local users, but not to other sites. How does that sit with you folks? ken coar@umass
