Certainly indexes, bibliographies, etc., whether compiled from non-coyrighted or copyrighted material are protected. It is recognized that the sometimes massive effort that goes into such works needs protection. An extreme example might be the OED (Oxford Engligh Dictionary) which consists, to a great extent, of copied examples of usage.
