Perhaps the author just made a typo -- The correct figure is 4 feet, *8* and 1/2 inches. To add some trivia and confusion -- some streetcar lines do not use standard gauge. I believe Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are two notable cases. I've heard they use something called "Pennsylvania Trolley Gauge," which is 5-feet, 2 inches (give or take a fraction). Carl Blesch
