I don't quite understand all the foofraw about the light sabers.  
My understanding of the situation was that the light saber is an
outmoded weapon -- though it still might be considered extremely
powerful in the right (or wromg) hands.  Somethig like a sword is
today.  Thus, although it might be a little difficult to find a
lioght saber in your corner weapons shop, it is not as if only a
Jedi Knight is allowed/able to have one.  From the discussion so 
far one would have the impression that the light saber is some
kind of mystical weapon...
