This situation does not cause filesystem corruption, but does tend to be both annoying and undesirable. I wrote uusquish for a highly specialized case of a vanilla uucp system, where this situation does not occur. The easiest fix would be to stat all files and re-make directories rather than link/unlink as in the case of ordinary files.
