INFO WANTED: Home computer

My Uncle is buying a home computer for his kids (high school age),
both math/science oriented, both quite intelligent.  He is wondering
what to buy.  Since I am NOT into home computers (this VAX 780 is
my "toy") I thought all the nice people out in netland might be
able to give some advice.
Constraints:  $800-$1500 initially.  Obviously it needs to be able
to add a hard disk and printer later; initally though, only a
cpu, memory, crt, floppy.  Needs to be programmable (a learning tool not
a games machine), preferably with languages in addition to basic.
