Planting involved notrhing more than breaking the mother into cloves and planting them in rich soil. Like onions, garlic should never thirst for water. They probably need a period of long days in which to bulbm (some onions need 14 hour days). When the tops droop, the garlic is ready but should be left in the ground to season.
