Last year I planted sweet corn, and I lost some of it to smut. I pulled all the stalks affected and permanently disposed of them. I intend to put the corn in a different garden this year, as I understand that the spores winter over in the soil. Is there any fungicide that is effective? Also do the spores live more than 1 year in the soil? (there are only so many places I can rotate the corn into) Please don't tell me that smut is considered a delicacy in Mexico, I think it is the most disgusting looking stuff (somewhere on a par with slugs, or maybe worse).
