Growing up in the 60s, model movie engineers appeared in James Bond movies.
Usually they did very interesting work ( created cars, space craft, nuclear
reactors ) but always ended up dying by the hundreds when the  "good"  guys
came in and distroyed the "bad" guy`s island, space center, or whatever.  I
learned that it was better to work for the government in a non-technical job,
chasing fast cars and women then
