The following explanation may account for the 3 days and 3 nights.
The counting began when God turned day into night and stopped the sun
from shinning.
	Luke 23:44
		It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over
		the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped
		shinning.
	
So the counting goes:
	Friday    Saturday   Sunday
	night-day night-day  night-day

According to our way of starting a day with morning, God added a night to
Friday, so Friday has night-day-night, Saturday has day-night, and Sunday
has day.

A previous article showing that 40 hours elapsed from Christ's death to
resurrection is very enlightening and makes a lot of sense to me.
