a quick answer to john gilmore's question (why do people get married?):
to end the uncertainty.  life's an experiment and you're both the experimenter
and the experimentee; i personally think 'serial monogamy' will turn out
to be a sort of 'norm' over time, in that the only way to find out the
how's and what's of marriage is to DO it.  at the same time, i'll be
the first to say that masochism, ie, a continued bad marriage, is silly:
if you don't like your life, pick it up by the ears and change it.  if
you're too gutless to do something about it, well, that's another problem
albeit not disassociatable from those of marriage.
