The standard for birth control effectiveness is given in terms of
100 sexually active women for one year so 85% effectiveness rate
refers to one year of use. (85% is not really very good, so unless
you don`t care that much you probably should add a condum or use some
other method.)  The percentages are obviously statistical averages
affected by the population group for which they were determined, etc,etc.
