At the risk of sounding hopelessly conventional and upright,
I can only hope that you are using the phrase "pawing" as a
'cute' euphamism.  If you're not, you are correct in the
assumption that most women would kill a guy for doing that
right away.  I also hope that "pawing" is not the reason
you date women/girls.  Some of them are even fun to talk
to!  If, however, you're on a date with a woman you enjoy
and if you want to 'get physical', read Lady Arwen's comment
for some helpful advice.  Start small (a hug, hold hands) and
then either ask or try a tentative kiss.  NEVER jump right
in there and get to business.  True, maybe then she won't
think you're gay, but she also won't think you're a swell
guy either.  It also depends on where you are.....
