Title: Backpacking in Hawaii: info wanted

My wife and I are interested in going backpacking in Hawaii sometime later
this year. We would like to hike for 4 or 5 days on trails which will take
us throught various geological and botanic zones: volcanoes, canyons, 
waterfalls, beaches, tropical forests, etc. Of course, we would like to
avoid the hot lava flows I have read about recently in the news.

If anyone has any info/suggestions about where to hike, and what time of year
is good, please send mail. I seem to recall an article dealing with this subjectseveral months ago. If anyone has a copy, it would be greatly appreciated.
As is customary, I will summarize and post to the net if there is sufficient
interest.
