In college I had the same problem with a friends cat.  I've
still got a few old favorite tapes with occaisional skips --
and I still smile to this day thinking about the cat having
just jumped onto the dust cover.  That cat lives -- on my tapes.

Regarding the magic tonearm experiment: no fair using zerostats
or de-static'ed dust cloths oiled with lemon pledge.

p.s.  I don't think I'd smile if it had been my dog violating the 
dust cover.
