Thanks to the people who pointed out the obvious that was not obvious
to me:  tape deck pinch rollers & capstans get grungy with oxides and
this frequently causes the best of tapes to stick and snarl.  for me
the expedient solution was to pick up a pint of methanol from the
corner drugstore for a buck-fifty and have at the crud with a Q-tip. 
end of problem.
