I can only conclude that more people are interested in plot development than in character development. While the plot was on the slow side, most of that was due to the excellent character development, which, as others have pointed out, is King's strong point. In "The Stand" he does such a good job of making you care for his characters that I even felt a little sorry for Harold (the adolescent slob) when he gets killed. For the person who wanted to know the name of the earlier short story collection, it is called "Night Shift". Interestingly enough, as somebody else mentioned the "The Stand" seemed like a short story idea overblown (and that was a paraphrasing on my part), one might be interested in one story in this collection entitled "Night Surf".
