Apologies to those who have already seen it.] POSITION: programmer/software engineer with specialization in signal processing analysis of speech SALARY: approx. $26K/year LOCATION: Phonetics Laboratory, University of California, San Diego TENURE: present to October 1984, possibly longer We are developing models of speech perception within an "interactive activation" framework and are looking for a software engineer with experience in signal processing analysis of speech to assist in the project. The project involves developing techniques for carrying out parallel processing within a system of computationally simple (but highly interconnected) elements, and applying these techniques to the task of speech understanding in a way which has some psychological and linguistic plausibility. The current simulation is able to extract 16 features from speech input and recognize a limited number of phonemes and words. Duties involve developing software for signal processing of speech data, assisting in the development and refinement of acoustic/phonetic feature extraction, helping maintain UNIX (4.1bsd) operating system running on a VAX 11/750 computer, and helping in psycholinguistic experiments which may be carried out in conjunction with modeling efforts. Prior experience with speech recognition techniques essential. Experience with UNIX and the C programming language highly desirable. Experience with graphics desirable but not essential.
