What experience do you have with letter-quality printers in the
$400-$900 range?  I am thinking of printers such as the
Smith Corona TP-1, Transtar 130 and Z380, DTC 380Z, Royal 5010,
Silver Reed EX42, and Diablo 620.

How reliable are they, is there information from the manufacturer
or elsewhere on building an interface for them to a parallel or serial
port?
