I have experienced an example of softwhere rot. While at Yale I wrote a full-screen accounting editor (in DEC-FORTRAN of all things arghh!). About a year later I got a call from the treasury department telling me that the editor would not run. They were right, it wouldn't. No bug fixes could be necessary since I had not touched the program in years. Recompiling the program was all that was necessary to make it work again.
