More species have been recorded at San Elijo Lagoon than any other local. The following are some of the more unusual sightings: European widgeon - rare Clapper rail - population declining White-faced ibis Belding's savanna sparrow - population declining Downy woodpecker Bell's vireo - population declining Harlequin duck - rarely sighted in Southern California Yellow-crowned night heron - up from Baja California Eurasion widgeon Chimney Swift - normally seen only on East Coast, seem to have made the lagoon a stop in their migration
