This reminds me of the days I spent in CB radio 8 or 9 years ago.
Everybody except a few people had a "Handle" and it was considered
a faux pas to use somebody's real name, even if you knew it.  Of course
some rough types used CBs and it was all much more local than netnews.
I quit CB for about a year, but then took my radio off the shelf to try
it for a few days, about the time when 40 channels appeared.  Instead of
using a handle, I called myself "Brad" (my name) and everybody did an
audio double-take on this unusual usage.  Be thankful we are not that
far.
