It would be a pleasant relief from being turned down. However, my question is--suppose you would just as soon not go out with her? Mind you, not that you dislike her or whatever, you just do not happen to be interested. The choice you are left with is to refuse, which I believe would be an rather nasty insult to someone who has just complimented you rather nicely, or to accept a date you do not want and have to face the problem of refusal further down the road. So I think I can see why women rarely ask men directly for dates, and think it is probably just as well they do not.
