I have found writing my thoughts and feelings has always been an effective way to communicate them to someone I care about. It certainly is not a substitute for face to face interaction, but when two people find personal contact very painful, a letter helps. Who does it help? The author may feel better after getting those feelings down on paper, but I feel those ideas are wasted if the letter is not sent. Even if "old wounds" are somehow opened, I think it is definitely worth communicating those feelings to the concerned party. This only applies if there is some caring left in you. Certainly the easiest way to break up is without regard for the other person, in which case a letter would be only self-serving. I guess my only point is that letters are very valuable to me - either sent or received - when two people do care for eachother, but the relationship as they are used to it is ending.
