The USG UNIX tty driver solves this by the simple expedient of not echoing your EOF character, and passing EOT through in all modes like any other character. Now if it would only echo control characters, or at least the special TTY driver control characters, as "^", so you could get visual feedback that the EOT actually got through to the computer...
