You should take your stylus in at least once a year, or 6 months if heavily used. Make sure the guy knows what he's doing and if possible ask to see it yourself (some places will take a picture of it, for a small fee). Don't take chances with minor wear if clearly visible, especially if chipped. The extra cost of replacing the stylus more often would be outweighed by record damage with a worn stylus.
